English vineyards and wineries are no strangers to rising to the challenge, yet 2020 has been quite a hill to climb at times. Simpsons’ Wine Estate has weathered the storm, with our amazing team pulling together to continue to produce and promote our exquisite English wines.
Although the 2020 growing season started well with high sunshine hours and good rainfall, we experienced 6 frost incidents between the mid-April and mid-May, which is more than average and even with our frost fans in place, we unfortunately suffered some frost damage.
In the areas where the frost damage occurred and yields were lower, this meant a slightly earlier start to the harvest than in previous years. Interestingly however, those lower yields actually meant better concentration and sugars for our still wines – the frost almost acted as a natural bud rub/green harvest!
We are hoping to create approximately 180,000 bottles this year across our range of still and Classic Method sparkling wines. This will be a 10% decrease on the 2019 vintage, however although yields are lower, the quality of the fruit is seriously impressive, particularly for the creation of top quality still wines, which there seems to be an insatiable demand for.
Over the past two vintages, still wine production has represented one third of our production, whereas this year, over half of our production will be still, which is a reflection of that quality and demand.

We are working hard to provide support to our trade clients and we really feel for our colleagues and friends in the hospitality industry, who are continuing to be hit hard by the restrictions and lockdown measures.
Our team has also worked hard to support our two chosen local charities, The Pilgrims Hospices and Demelza Hospice Care for Children.
We are pleased and proud to report that our virtual tasting events with our amazing corporate partners have helped to raise over £7,600 for Demelza Hospice, which relies upon donations to keep providing their life-changing services, and more, to children with serious or terminal conditions and their families.
Plus there have been some amazing award success stories with gold medals for our wines at the Sommelier Wine Awards, Champagne and Sparkling Wine World Championships and International Wine Competition.
With the crowning glory going to our Roman Road Chardonnay 2018, which was heralded “Best in Show” at the Decanter World Wine Awards, an accolade reserved for the 50 most esteemed wines internationally each year.
There have been some wonderful highlights this year, signalling further confirmation of the Simpsons’ status in the industry. In February Walpole, the industry body for the UK’s luxury sector, selected Simpsons’ Wine Estate as one of the twelve 2020 Brands of Tomorrow - a development programme, which supports growing luxury businesses. Simpsons' Wine Estate is only the second winery to be selected for the programme. The aim of the initiative is to strengthen “the success and dynamic growth of the luxury industry through transference of skills, experience and know-how to ensure continued creative development”.
The future is bright for Simpsons’ Wine Estate, as we endeavour to uphold our celebrated winemaking styles, whilst always seeking to showcase the nuances of each growing season. Our wines are being enjoyed across the globe, with a growing interest in Scandinavia.
Once ready, we are very much looking forward to sharing with you the 2020 vintages of our still and sparkling wines, with particular focus on a special edition, premium, still Pinot Noir and Chardonnay release, the ‘Q Class’, which is designed to further enhance Simpsons’ reputation as one of the best still wine producers in the country.
