Tasting Notes

This wine has a delicate lemon hue, with a complex matrix of citrus and honeysuckle, with candied orange peel, crushed vanilla pod and flint on the nose. This Chardonnay displays mouth-watering, ripe fruit intensity, balanced with an elegant minerality, toasted macadamia nut texture and a long, luxurious finish.

Technical Details

Grape Variety: 100% Chardonnay

Alcohol: 13% Vol

Harvesting & Vinification: The grapes (specifically Burgundian clone 548) were harvested during the last week of October in order to find the perfect balance of aroma, flavour and acidity. Once pressed, the juice was left to settle for 12 hours. Once racked the juice was inoculated with a Burgundian strain yeast.

Fermentation & Storage: Once primary fermentation was complete, 25% of the final blend was transferred to new French oak and 25% to older French barrels. Bâtonnage was performed during malolactic fermentation and twice more throughout the ageing process. The remaining 50% of the blend stayed on fermentation lees in stainless-steel tanks, however was not stirred, by way of passive bâtonnage. After six months in tank and barrel, the wine was lightly filtered and bottled in spring 2024.

Reviews

"There's beautiful ripeness here, like a lemon and meringue pie and perfectly judged nutty oak."

Henry Jeffreys, The Buyer

"Scoring 16.5/20 - a serious, well-made wine that would give pleasure. Pure fruit with impressive persistence."

Jancis Robinson

"For the second year running, England (and Kent) has stepped up to the Best-In-Show challenge with a still Chardonnay wine of starry quality. That doesn't, of course, mean something the colour of a buttercup and with a lush and flamboyantly nutty scent; this wine is green-silver pale and aromatically very shy: a little slight teasing creaminess, just hinting at both flowers and fruit without actually cashing in on the promise with a suite of emphatic allusions. On the palate, it is pure and vivacious, lively and dancing: a spring-fresh Chardonnay of great grace whose pleasures are almost amplified by their restraint, and by the resulting drinkability and gastronomic amenability of the wine. Fine vineyards and a fine season have come together to memorable effect here.”

Judging Panel, Decanter World Wine Awards 2020

"A minerality is present due to the chalky soil but it’s the soft, creamy finish thanks to malolactic fermentation and nine months in French oak barrels that impart the spicy, vanilla notes we love".

Stacey Smith, The Independent
